ON-LINE CATALOGUE OF ABA CUPRUM - Religious and Devotional Articles Welcome to the offering of religious icons and other devotional articles from ABA Cuprum. Our icons include both Orthodox and Catholic works and include sizes from Smaller Miniatures to exterior works several meters in dimension. We also offer Rosary Boxes as well as Crucifixes and Gospel Covers. Icons are a combination of historical copies and commissioned works. It is possible for you to commission a new work or modify an existing work. For icons with opening in the metal cover, the images below are typically hand-painted. Some of the icons have extensively painted areas. The extensive metal-working in icons and devotional items involves silver plating (on a copper base). Halos, auerolas, crowns, and accents are typically coated with 24 karat gold. Besides gold and silver, some icons have jewels, pearls, crystals, and stones in addition to handsculpted wood. Icons have metal covers (oklad), usually with holes that reveal hand-painted figures underneath, the painting extends to just beyond each hole. All icons have cotton velvet backing plus clasp for hanging. The metal covers, which are not removable, lay above the painted surface and have extensive detailing and bas-relief. Larger oklad covers have more detailing and three-dimensional relief. The silver plating typically has been darkened ("antiqued") and then sealed. This emphasizes the bas-relief and detailing of the metalworking and suggests tarnishing present in historical icons. To assemble an icon, a thin high density very flat press board is nailed to a thicker high density particle (glue-wood composite) board. The press board is then prepared for painting. At the end the press board/particle board is wrapped in cotton velvet (leaving the painted areas untouched), and the cover is placed on top of the velvet.
